Mt. Baker, an essentially-dormant volcano, is east of White Rock. The last active volcano in the area was Mt. St. Helen's which erupted in May, 1980, (with loss of life). The morning this photograph was taken, there were high winds as evidenced by the blowing snow, brightly-lit by the rising sun. The tiny red pinpoint in the lower-center of the image is a tower which marks the 49th parallel border between Canada and the U.S., (Washington State).
@Brian: Thank you, Brian - this mountain is a challenge to photograph!
@Gérard Flayol: Thank you, Gérard! Yes, the mountain is casting its shadow, which lent a darker background for the blowing snow!
@Roger Dekert: Thanks, Roger - yes, I hadn't thought of it that way - good observation!
@Maryse: Merci beaucoup, Maryse! Yes, thankfully it is dormant!
@Marjolein: Many thanks Marjolein - the bright orange lasted only a few minutes!
@Anna Cherer: Thank you, Anna - what caught the eye was the scene of the long, long shadow of the mountain cast across the clouds!
@Jason Kravitz: "Slightly surreal", I like that a lot! The light on the tower was "on" steady; it is much more challenging to photograph, say, a lighthouse! ;-)
@bruce millen: Many thanks, Bruce - once in a while, the mountain is not entirely hidden by the clouds!
@Darkelf Photography: Thank you, "Darkelf", beautiful description!
